Ankit moved from Dehradun to Gurugram in 2023 for work. By the fourth month his hair felt rough after every wash, and there were more strands in the bucket than he could pretend not to see.
Everyone in his flat had the same explanation ready. Borewell water.
He was half right, and the half he got wrong cost him two years. Hard water was roughening and breaking the hair already on his head. Underneath that, pattern hair loss was quietly thinning what grew back, and no shower filter reaches a follicle.
This URoots hair story follows what his doctor found, the two-arm plan he started, what changed at his 3-month review, and where his hair fall stood at month 6. Results shift with stage and cause, and with how closely a plan is followed, so read his timeline as a reference point.
Note: Ankit is a representative case, not one identifiable patient. His profile, stage and plan reflect the pattern our doctors see most often in men aged 25 to 35. No patient photographs are shown.
What Hard Water Actually Does To Hair, And What It Does Not
Water carrying more than 180 mg of dissolved calcium and magnesium per litre is classed as very hard, and much of Gurugram's newer development runs on borewells drawing from hard groundwater.
In one controlled comparison, hair strands soaked in hard water and hair soaked in deionised water were pulled apart on a testing machine. The hard water strands snapped under less force, dropping from 255 grams to 234 grams. [1] Less force to break means more breakage in ordinary life: while combing, while towelling, while tying it back.
An earlier Indian study ran a similar comparison at 212 ppm hardness across 30 days and found no meaningful difference in either strength or stretch. [2] So the effect is real but modest, and it shows up with higher hardness and longer exposure rather than after a single wash. Neither study found any link between hard water and hair falling out of the follicle itself.
Hard water damages the hair you have already grown. It does not shrink the root that grows it. Ankit had both things happening at once, which is the honest answer to why his filter helped for six weeks and then seemed to quit on him. It fixed everything it was capable of fixing, and the second problem carried on underneath.
Doctor's note: A hair that has shed from the root carries a small pale bulb at one end. A hair that has snapped from damage has no bulb, and both ends look blunt. Pick up 10 strands from your pillow tonight and look at the ends. Mostly bulbs points one way. Mostly blunt ends points the other.
Breakage and shedding look identical in the drain and need completely different handling. Almost nobody treats both.
Most Men Who Walk in Have No Idea Why Their Hair is Falling
Between 25 and 35. That is the age band our doctors see most, and Ankit at 28 sat squarely in the middle of it.
Very few of them arrive with a theory worth anything. They know something has changed. Whether the cause is genetic, nutritional, stress, water or a product they used in 2021, they honestly cannot say, and they have usually been guessing at it for a year or more before the first consult.
The consult itself is mostly questions before it is anything else. Family history on both sides of the family. When it started and how fast it moved. Everything already tried, including the things they are slightly embarrassed about. Sleep. Diet. Any illness or sharp weight loss in the past year. Thyroid history.
Three things get settled before a single product is named: what is causing it, how far it has gone, and whether the follicles in the affected area are still working.
Ankit's stage, and why it mattered
His hairline had moved back at both temples and the parting had started to open across the middle of his scalp. The crown was still fully covered. In staging terms that put him at Norwood 3.
His father had reached a much later stage by 45, which mattered more than anything Ankit had bought off a shelf.
Blood work came back with vitamin D at 14 ng/mL and ferritin at 38 ng/mL, with thyroid readings normal.
Genetics was driving it. The diagnosis is the real product here. Everything sold afterwards is just execution.
The Goal Most Patients Actually Say Out Loud
"40 tak theek chal jaaye."
Some version of that sentence comes up in a majority of first consults with men in their late twenties. Not a full head of hair at 20. Not the hairline from a college photo. Just: hold on to what I have, in decent shape, until at least 40.
That target is workable, and it is worth saying why. Treatment protects and thickens follicles that are still producing hair. Over an area that has been smooth for years, it does very little, because there is nothing left there to work with.
So Ankit's plan was built as a holding plan first. Any regrowth beyond that was upside, not the promise on the label. Because his goal was realistic, his plan could be honest with him.
The First 3 Months: What His Customised Plan Looked Like
Two problems meant two arms, and both started on the same day.
Aim 1, repairing what the water was doing
|
Product |
Price |
Role in his plan |
|
Rs 249 |
Mild aloe-based daily cleanse. Replaced the harsh anti-hardwater shampoos that were stripping his scalp further. |
|
|
Rs 199 |
Ketoconazole 2% with zinc pyrithione, twice a week, for the flaking he had stopped mentioning to anyone. |
|
|
Rs 449 |
Pre-wash Bhringraj and Amla layer to condition the scalp. The massage was the one step he never skipped. |
These support the scalp environment. None of them acts on pattern hair loss, and none of them was asked to.
Aim 2, treating the cause underneath
|
Product |
Price |
Role in his plan |
|
Rs 699 |
The working topical, applied as directed by his doctor. Alcohol-free, which mattered on a scalp that was already dry. |
|
|
Rs 240 |
Oral finasteride, dispensed only after doctor review and taken exactly as prescribed. |
|
|
Rs 699 |
Beta-sitosterol with L-arginine, NAC, biotin, zinc and selenium. The internal arm. |
|
|
Per report |
High-dose vitamin D3 for his 14 ng/mL deficiency, dosed to his blood result and taken under the doctor. |
Finasil is prescription-grade and stays under a doctor throughout. Women who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or nursing must not take it, and must not handle the tablets.
Xtend KZ Shampoo, the minoxidil and the supplement together are the Complete Hair Care System Kit at Rs 1,519. The Finasil came on prescription after his consult, the rest of the repair side was added for his water, and the D3 dose came off his blood report and nobody else's. That is what customised means in practice, and it is not a bigger box.
Then the plan was left alone for 3 months. Nothing useful shows before that, and changing things early only makes it impossible to know what worked.

The week-6 shedding that makes people quit
Ankit came close to stopping in week 6, and he was not unusual. Month 2 and month 3 are when most people decide the plan has failed, which is precisely when the plan has not had time to show anything.
The month-3 review, and what changed after it
The review looked at four things. Photographs against the week 0 set. His own sense of daily fall. The state of his scalp. Whether he had actually used the topical every day, which is the single most common reason a plan underperforms.
His flaking had settled, so Xtend KZ dropped to once a week. His scalp had tolerated the topical without irritation and his daily fall was down, so Dr. Ketan left the treatment arm exactly where it was. The mid-scalp was the slower area, and URoots Hair Serum went in as a night step to support it.
Not every review ends in a bigger plan. Ankit's ended with one product used less and one added, which is what a review is for.
Then the next 3 months ran on the revised plan. Review, adjust, run again. A plan is a loop, not a purchase.
When a Topical Is Not Enough
Two things bring this conversation forward. A stage that has gone past what topical care holds, or a response that has flattened across two full cycles with good adherence.
At that point the discussion moves to in-clinic non-surgical options, taken as a course under a doctor and run alongside the home routine rather than replacing it.
Where an area has been smooth for years, there is no follicle left to work on, and that is when a hair transplant becomes the real conversation. Ankit was nowhere near it. Some readers will be, and saying otherwise would be the fastest way to lose them.
Before After Hair Treatment Photos: How to Take Yours
Same room, same light, dry hair, same parting, on the same date each month. Four angles: front hairline, mid-scalp parting, crown from above, and profile. No filters. No wet-hair comparisons, because wet hair always looks thinner and makes month 6 flatter you unfairly.
When Dr. Ketan reads a set of before after hair treatment photos, he is separating three things that all look like improvement. Genuine density change. A smoother shaft catching light better. A different haircut.
What the photos cannot tell you: how thick each individual hair has become, whether the temples will ever match the mid-scalp, or what happens if you stop.
In Ankit's set, the shine came from the repair arm and the density came from the treatment arm. Being able to tell those apart is what stops people crediting the wrong bottle.
Women Come In for This Too, and the Plan Looks Different
It shows up differently. A parting that keeps widening, a ponytail that has thinned out, hair coming away all over rather than a line moving back.
The triggers our doctors see cluster around the postpartum months, thyroid problems, low ferritin, PCOS, crash dieting and long stretches of stress.
What is never in a woman's plan: finasteride, dutasteride, or 10% minoxidil.
What is: Growbald EVA Daily Hair Wellness Multivitamin, URoots Hair Serum, the women's 1 mm scalp roller, and a topical strength decided by the doctor rather than picked off a shelf.
Where Ankit Is Now
He is on Finasil and the minoxidil solution, with the serum, the supplement and the daily shampoo around them. His vitamin D has been rechecked and dosed to the newer report. Xtend KZ comes out only when the flaking returns.
What he brings up now is not the filters or the shampoos. It is the 24 months he spent guessing, at a stage that was answering to treatment the whole time.
His results hold while the routine holds. Stop the topical and the follicles return to their own timeline.
The change he mentions is small and specific. He stopped choosing the seat furthest from the ceiling light.
If This Sounds Like Your Last Two Years, Start With the Stage
Ankit's mistake was not the filter. It was spending two years treating hair fall without ever finding out what stage he was at.
Take the URoots hair test. It takes a few minutes and it decides everything that comes after.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does hard water cause hair fall?
It causes breakage rather than loss from the root. Hard water leaves strands rougher and weaker, so they snap while you comb or towel them. That looks exactly like hair fall in the bucket. No study has linked water hardness to the follicle itself shrinking.
Kya sirf filter lagane se hair fall ruk jaata hai?
A filter handles the water and nothing else. If pattern hair loss is running underneath, the filter has nothing to say to it. That is why people feel a real improvement for four to six weeks, then watch it flatten out and blame the filter.
How do I know if my hair is breaking or falling from the root?
Look at the ends of the strands you collect. Do this across a few days rather than one, because a single wash day tells you very little. Take them from your pillow or comb, not the shower floor, where strands pile up from different days.
How long before I see a change?
Ankit's plan ran untouched for 3 months before his first review, and that is the standard rhythm. Judging it at week 4 or week 6 gives you nothing to judge. Photograph on the same date each month, in the same light, and let the set answer the question for you.
What happens if I stop after 6 months?
The support stops with it. Topical results are held while the routine continues, so stopping returns the follicles to their own timeline. This is worth deciding before you start rather than at month 8, because a plan you cannot keep up was never going to hold anything.
I am 27 and just want to keep my hair till 40. Is that realistic?
It is the goal most men your age state, and it is the kind of goal a plan can be built around honestly. Holding what is still growing asks less of treatment than rebuilding an area smooth for years. Your stage decides which one you are asking for.
