What Does Hair Transplant Maintenance Actually Involve?
After a hair transplant, patients often expect that hair shedding will stop and progressive hair thinning will not affect them anymore. A part of the assumption is true: transplanted hair is retained for life as it is generally more resistant to androgenetic miniaturisation. The follicles are harvested from the DHT-resistant donor area, which means the follicles remain unaffected by hormone-driven miniaturisation. The surrounding native hair remains susceptible to androgeneic miniaturisation. Progressive thinning still affects the native hair, and hair transplant maintenance means continuing the prescribed medical routine past month 12 so that the native hair does not fall and result in balding. The maintenance treatments can help protect the susceptible native hair and may need to be continued indefinitely to keep the gains.
What The 12-Month Mark Confirms, and What It Leaves Open
Clinicians are advised to monitor patients for 6 to 12 months after surgery, until the implanted grafts have fully matured, with photographs taken in that same window. Jahid reached that milestone and liked what he saw.

Why Maintenance Is A Medical Treatment Question
Surgery transplants the hair to balding regions, but treatment protects the rest of the hair.
To protect the native hair, the most commonly prescribed treatment regimen is topical minoxidil and prescription oral finasteride. Adjunctive therapies such as PRP and LLLT can also be recommended for better results.

Three Things Men Get Wrong at One Year
After a transplant, most men think that hair care is not needed and the work is finished. Grafts are transplanted, but the scalp around them is still under the influence of genetic hair fall. In the first year, the results look good, with transplanted hair growing to full density at around months 12-18. In the subsequent years, the native hair continues to thin, or to put it precisely, thinning becomes apparent.
A good hair transplant result does not mean the work is done.
Another thing that most men get wrong is stopping the treatment abruptly. Results take time to become noticeable; if you do not see any difference in the first few months, it does not mean the medicine is not working. Moreover, the potential side effects associated with finasteride can also make men stop the treatment without consulting their doctor. The side effects are usually reversed once the medication is stopped, although patients should discuss side effects with their doctor.
