Hair wrapped around the drain cover after every wash. An extra twist on the hairband. Strands on the pillow that were not there last month.

What you are seeing has a clock on it. The name for it is telogen effluvium, a heavy phase of hair fall that begins 2 to 3 months after your body takes a hit: a high fever, childbirth, a crash diet, low iron.

Acute cases stop shedding on their own inside 6 months. That makes telogen effluvium treatment a hunt for the trigger, not a hunt for the hair. Growth restarts by month 6, and the density you can see in the mirror fills back over the year that follows.

Most people bring this to a doctor already certain they are going bald. They are not. The follicle is not dead. It went to sleep early, and it wakes up. This page will help you tell it apart from pattern hair loss, which arrives slowly and quietly, and show what recovery looks like month by month.

Sudden Hair Shedding is Frightening, and It Is Rarely What You Think It Is

A healthy scalp lets go of up to 100 strands a day and you never notice, because they leave in ones and twos across a whole head. Sudden hair shedding pushes that as high as 300. Same scalp, same follicles, three times the traffic leaving at once.

Under the skin, nothing is breaking. A follicle spends up to 4 years growing a single hair. After that it winds down, and the hair settles into a rest phase, held in place by a small white bulb of keratin at the root. On a calm scalp, around 90% of follicles are in the growing phase at any given moment and 5% to 10% are resting.

A shock to the body flips that arrangement. Up to 70% of growing hairs get pushed into rest early, together, instead of drifting there one at a time across years. They hold. Then they release as a group, which is why the hair fall arrives as a wave. Doctors call the growing phase anagen and the resting phase telogen. The group release is telogen effluvium.

The first check is whether the scalp itself looks unhappy. Redness, flaking, burning, or an itch that will not settle points somewhere other than here. With this, the skin underneath looks completely ordinary while the hair is leaving.

It is also one of the most common causes of rapid hair loss, which is an odd kind of comfort. In most cases it spares the hairline, and it does not empty the scalp.

The hard part of stress shedding hair is the delay. By the time the strands are reaching your palm, many people have already recovered from whatever set this off and see no link between the two at all. So the mirror is the wrong place to go looking for your answer. Your calendar is the better one.

Telogen Effluvium Symptoms: What You Notice First

There is nothing to feel. No pain, no burning, no warning on the skin, which is why people miss the beginning of this and then panic somewhere in the middle.

The question our doctors hear weekly is a version of the same one: how do I know it is this and not something worse? Three signs answer it. Check two of them yourself tonight.

The hairs coming out have a small white bulb at the root

Pick one off your kurta shoulder and look at the end that used to sit in your scalp. You already know what that pale bulb is. What matters here is what is missing from it: no wet, jelly-like sheath wrapped around the root.

That absence is one of the markers used to confirm a hair that left from the resting phase rather than one pulled out mid-growth. Width and length get read too.

Two hairs of the same length and thickness, shed in quantity, point somewhere quite different from a mixed handful of thin, short, tapering ones, and that difference is part of how this hair loss gets separated from the other kinds.

Thinning is diffuse, not patchy

The thinning spreads across the top of the scalp, thinner everywhere rather than absent in one place, and in most cases it takes less than half the hair on your head.

A round bald patch with a clean border is a different conversation entirely, and alopecia areata is one of the conditions a doctor is ruling out when they look at the shape of the loss.

Indian women rarely arrive describing a scalp. They arrive with two measurements. The rubber band that used to go round twice now goes round three times.

Those are the earliest honest signals, and they beat the mirror, because a full head of hair hides a great deal of volume loss before it shows from the front.

Your scalp looks and feels normal

The skin stays quiet, as covered earlier. It also stays undamaged. No scarring forms underneath, even while the shedding is at its heaviest.

Which brings up the one thing patients change first and should not. Hair fall spikes on wash day, so the shampoo gets stretched to once a week, the champi gets skipped, the comb comes out less. Normal washing and styling do not make this worse.

Your hair is behaving normally, and treating it normally is fine. What is worth pausing is the chemical and heat load: the smoothening appointment booked before the wedding, the straightener on Sunday morning, the curling rod.

Check all three before you go looking for telogen effluvium treatment, because what you do next depends entirely on how many of them line up. The hair on your pillow is evidence; these three signs tell you what it is evidence of.

Telogen Effluvium Causes: The Trigger Came Months Ago

Patients almost always name the wrong month. They point to the week the strands started collecting in the bathroom, when the answer sits further back, by exactly the gap you already know about.

Illness, high fever, and post-COVID shedding

Anything that puts the whole body under strain qualifies. A febrile illness that flattens you for a week, dengue or typhoid in the season for it, a severe infection, a major surgery, a serious injury on the road. Your hair keeps growing straight through the crisis and settles the bill afterwards.

Childbirth and postpartum shedding

Pregnancy keeps more hair in the growing phase, and for longer. Delivery ends that arrangement. Estrogen falls, the held hair is released together, and the shedding shows up 3 to 4 months after the birth. The same hormonal exit sits behind two situations that catch women off guard: stopping estrogen-containing birth control, and the years around menopause.

Crash diets, low protein, low iron

40 to 60 grams of protein a day is the working target, and higher if you are vegetarian or vegan. That is an easy number to miss on a rice-heavy plate, in a hostel mess, or on the pre-wedding diet that takes 6 kg off in five weeks. Rapid weight loss triggers this on its own. Iron, zinc, B vitamins and vitamin D all feed the growing hair, and correcting a genuine shortfall is what lets growth resume. A blood test tells you which one is short. Guessing does not.

Turn the Gemline-D3 Vitamin D3 Capsules for Hair Care strip over and you will find cholecalciferol at 60,000 IU per capsule. That is a high-dose strength, which is why our doctors keep it behind a test result and their own instruction, taken as directed. It corrects a deficiency. That is the whole of its job. High calcium, kidney trouble, a thyroid condition or a pregnancy all need raising before the first capsule.

Thyroid problems and certain medicines

Both an underactive and an overactive thyroid sit on the trigger list. Tiredness that sleep does not fix, constipation, weight creeping up, feeling cold when nobody else in the room does: that cluster is what sends a doctor to the thyroid test.

Medicines belong here too. Beta-blockers, retinoids and excess vitamin A, blood thinners, some antidepressants, regular painkillers and certain blood-pressure drugs all appear on the list. Nobody stops a prescription over hair. That call belongs to the doctor who wrote it.

One honest thing to close on. In many cases no single cause is ever pinned down, and the shedding ends anyway. That is why telogen effluvium treatment starts with a blood test. The bottle, if you need one at all, comes after.

Telogen Effluvium and Stress: What The Link Actually Is

A power cut and a blown transformer are not the same event. One flickers the lights through dinner. The other takes the line down and keeps an engineer busy for a fortnight.

Stress works on hair the same way, which is where most advice on this gets it wrong. A brutal exam week will not empty your follicles. Neither will one bad breakup. What the evidence actually points at is significant, prolonged strain: the load that sits on the body for weeks and does not lift.

What the evidence does not show is anything you can take to head it off. No treatment is proven to prevent this or to halt the shedding once it has begun. Managing the trigger is what shortens the episode, and counselling support for stress or anxiety is on the list doctors work from. Mayo puts the verdict plainly: bring the stress down and the hair may return.

The part patients feel and rarely say out loud is that the hair fall becomes its own stressor. You check the pillow every morning now. At the follow-up, our doctors spend more time on the calendar than on the shelf. Where the plan starts is a stage diagnosis, because stress-linked shedding and pattern loss want different answers.

Calm Mind Stress Relief Supplement sits in that gap as a stress-support supplement. It works on the load, never on the follicle, and it is not the answer to hair loss on its own. Anyone pregnant, planning or nursing should ask a doctor first.

Bring the pressure down and you are treating the actual cause.

Telogen effluvium vs pattern loss: the two-minute check at home

Our doctors put a photograph from two years ago beside one from today and let the two argue it out. Comparing old pictures against the present is a recognised way to assess hair loss, and your phone does it as well as a consulting room. Open your gallery. Find yourself at a wedding two years back, then at last Diwali, then this week.

Two things come off those photos.

The clock first. Hair fall that arrived over a few weeks reads nothing like thinning you have to scroll back three years to notice.

Then the map. Loss spread across the whole top of the head points one way. A hairline retreating at the temples, or a crown opening up, points somewhere else.

When both are happening at once

Here is the honest part. Heavy shedding can mimic pattern hair loss while it is underway, and one scalp is perfectly capable of hosting both.

That is where the real fear lives, the one behind "my hair never came back fully." What returns once the shedding settles is the density you actually had underneath, which is not always the density you remember.

The two are managed differently, which is why guessing between them costs you months. Telogen effluvium treatment begins by finding the trigger. Pattern loss has no single trigger waiting to be found, and its treatment does not get to stop.

Your gallery already holds the answer. You have just never looked at it in order.

Telogen Effluvium in Women

More women than men end up asking a doctor about this, and only part of that is biology. Pregnancy is what makes women more susceptible. The rest is that shedding distresses women more, and they act on it sooner.

Postpartum shedding at month 3 to 4

You already have the timing and the hormone behind it. What that section did not say is that this one event is the main reason this condition sits more heavily on women than on men. It is also why a new mother hears "it's normal" from everyone in the house and still finds it frightening at 2 a.m. with a hairbrush in her hand.

When shedding lasts past 6 months

Past 6 months, it gets a different name. Chronic telogen effluvium means repeated stretches of shedding running beyond that half-year mark, and it lands mostly on middle-aged women.

This is where the blood report earns its place. Iron deficiency is checked with a full blood count, serum iron, iron saturation and ferritin. Two things about that report are worth knowing before you see it.

Your body protects blood ahead of hair, so shedding starts while your red cell counts still read fine. And ferritin climbs with inflammation, so a fever anywhere near the test date can lift a low ferritin into the normal band. Low ferritin confirms iron deficiency. A normal ferritin clears nothing. Iron saturation is the most sensitive of the four.

Growbald EVA Daily Hair Wellness Multivitamin for Women is a women's daily multivitamin built on biotin with a vitamin and mineral blend, made for the all-over kind of shedding. It closes nutritional gaps. It does not tell you which gap you have. Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or managing PCOS should ask a doctor before starting it.

The report tells you what to fix; the bottle only helps once you know.

Telogen Effluvium in Men

Most men do not book the appointment over shedding. They book it over the hairline they started studying while worrying about the shedding.

Both can occupy one scalp, as covered earlier, and pattern loss is on the list a doctor works through when a man turns up with an all-over shed.

The decision underneath matters more than the label. If this is the shedding kind, you do not need hair-growth medication and you do not need a transplant referral. Neither is necessary for it.

Topical minoxidil has never been proven to speed recovery here, though some men use it to feel they are doing something about the hair fall, which is a conversation to have with your doctor rather than with a website.

If your photographs show that pattern loss is the larger share of what is happening, the answer is a different one, and it does not get to stop.

URoots Hair Supplement suits the man who wants the internal side covered while the trigger gets sorted out: amino acids, biotin, zinc and selenium in a daily dose. It is nutritional support. Your own product page is straight about it not being enough on its own for advanced loss.

Work out which one you are treating. Everything you spend after that depends on getting this part right.

Telogen Effluvium Treatment: What a Doctor Actually Does

Twelve people. That is the entire size of the best clinical trial anyone has published on treating this condition, and it tells you most of what you need to know about the ground you are standing on.

1. Step one is finding and correcting the trigger

Acute cases settle by themselves, which is why treatment is mostly limited to reassurance. That word undersells what it does. Knowing this will not take you to baldness is what most patients actually came for, and an explanation of the cause and the expected course is enough on its own for the majority of them.

What a doctor corrects is the short list of reversible things: a poor diet, low iron, an underactive thyroid, a medicine you are already on. Where diet is the problem, a dietitian is worth more than a shelf of bottles. The brief there is adequate protein, refilling iron stores, and covering the essential nutrients.

2. The blood tests worth doing

You have the iron panel already, and what its numbers conceal. Three more belong on the same form. TSH reads the thyroid, and it is warranted when the symptoms are there. Vitamin D and zinc go on for the reason given earlier: correcting a genuine shortfall is what lets growth resume.

Does minoxidil help telogen effluvium?

What the evidence shows: A 2025 Japanese trial put 12 people on 5% topical minoxidil for 24 weeks. Terminal hair counts climbed by week 4. Around 70% improved by at least two grades on a hair wash test, and 80% were rated moderately improved or better by week 24.

What it does not show: Twelve people, no placebo group, and a condition that recovers on its own anyway. The authors name all three limitations themselves. For this condition minoxidil remains off-label and not definitively proven.

The verdict: It has a theoretical benefit, it is well tolerated, and patients who want an active role may choose it. That is the honest ceiling.

URoots Minoxidil 5% Solution for Men is the version patients ask for by name. Two things to hear before you start: minoxidil can cause a burst of shedding in the early weeks, which is when people quit, and side effects run to headache, scalp irritation and hair growing where you did not want it. It is not for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Heart conditions or age over 65 mean a conversation first, and it goes on as directed.

What does not help

A hair transplant is not an effective treatment for this. And if you are taking large doses of vitamin A, that is one to stop with your doctor's guidance.

Nobody has a proven way to speed this up. What a good doctor gives you instead is the reason it started and the date it ends.

Telogen Effluvium Recovery: When The Shedding Stops

Month 3 is where people quit. The shedding has not slowed, three months of effort look wasted, and the bottle goes into the cupboard exactly when the follicles are turning around.

Stage

What is happening

What you see

Month 0

The trigger event

Nothing

Month 2 to 3

Follicles shift into the resting phase

Shedding starts

Month 3 to 6

Shedding runs its course

Fewer hairs on wash day

Month 6 onward

Regrowth becomes visible

Two numbers hold this together. Shedding lasts 3 to 6 months. Once the cause is addressed, most cases resolve without any treatment inside 6 to 8 months, and new growth appears in the affected areas after the shedding period ends.

One honest caveat. Sometimes the rate of shedding slows without stopping altogether, and that is a reason to go back to your doctor rather than a reason to abandon the plan.

URoots Hair Serum is a peptide-based daily step for people who want something in the routine while the calendar does its work. Your own page calls it care rather than treatment, and that is exactly what it is here.

Nothing on this timeline needs your help. It needs your patience, and month 3 is where that gets tested.

When To See a Doctor

Most of this needs a calendar, not an appointment. Four things change that.

Shedding still going after the six-month mark. A bald patch with a border you can trace, rather than thinning you have to look for. A scalp doing anything at all: pain, scaling, flaking, or hairs snapping off and leaving dark dots behind.

And shedding that arrives alongside something else, tiredness that sleep does not touch, weight moving in either direction, feeling cold in a room nobody else finds cold.

That last group matters most. Sudden hair loss can signal an underlying condition that needs treating in its own right, and the hair is only how you found out.

Nothing here is a diagnosis. This article is general information, and your own scalp needs someone qualified looking at it.

Not sure which of these you are? Start with the URoots hair test. It takes two minutes and it tells you which conversation to have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my hair grow back fully?

In acute cases, yes. The large majority resolve, and the outlook for recovering your density is good. Chronic shedding is a different picture: it can carry on and still end in a good cosmetic result. Nobody can promise you a number, and most people do recover well.

How much shedding is too much?

Losing up to 100 hairs a day is normal. To measure it properly, collect every hair you shed over 24 hours without washing your hair, and repeat that weekly for three or four weeks. More than 100 in a day points toward this condition. The count falls as things improve.

Can telogen effluvium happen twice?

Yes. This is a reaction to something, so a second trigger can start a second episode. Many adults have one at some point in their life. Shedding that keeps returning past six months has its own name, chronic telogen effluvium, and that one belongs with a doctor.

Do hair oils stop telogen effluvium?

No. Nothing is proven to stop this shedding once it has started, and an oil is no exception. Champi remains good for your scalp and good for you, which is reason enough to keep it. What ends the shedding is the calendar and a corrected trigger.

Is telogen effluvium the same as alopecia?

Alopecia is simply the medical word for hair loss, so this sits inside it. Telogen effluvium is the non-scarring, temporary kind. Alopecia areata is a separate autoimmune condition that removes hair in patches. Same umbrella word, very different problems underneath.
