Description

Knix KZ is a medicated scalp shampoo by URoots, formulated with the antifungal and anti-inflammatory actives, ketoconazole 2%, and zinc pyrithione 1%. This formula targets dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. The two actives work together through different mechanisms to reduce microbial load on the scalp, which in turn reduces dandruff, redness and itching while supporting a healthier scalp environment for hair to grow in.

Use as directed by your dermatologist. Leave it on for 3-5 minutes before rinsing.

Suitable For

Suitable for individuals struggling with dandruff, scalp inflammation caused by conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, characterised by a red, flaky, and itchy scalp, fungal infections, scalp folliculitis and hair loss.

Also used as a pre-transplant scalp preparation protocol to optimise scalp health before surgical intervention.

It is a prescription-strength shampoo containing 2% ketoconazole and should only be used under a doctor’s guidance.

Safe to use for both men and women. Avoid using it on children under 12 years of age.

Active Ingredients

  • It is a broad-spectrum antifungal medication that works by compromising the structural integrity of fungal cell membranes by inhibiting the enzymes that produce ergosterol, which maintains cell membranes in fungi, resulting in fungal cell death. It also has anti-androgenic properties and helps reduce hair shedding associated with both fungal scalp inflammation and DHT-related follicle shrinkage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Q1. Is Knix KZ safe for hair?

Yes, when used as directed. Knix KZ is a paraben-free medicated formulation intended for use every 3 days for up to 4 weeks. Like most antifungal shampoos, it can leave hair feeling dry, which is why following up with a gentle conditioner is recommended. Do not exceed the recommended frequency or duration without your doctor's advice.

  • Q2. Can I use ketoconazole and zinc pyrithione shampoo together?

Yes, the two active ingredients complement each other and provide added benefits to control fungal growth, reduce dandruff and provide relief in conditions like psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema and fungal infections like ringworm. It helps in reducing both fungal and bacterial growth on the scalp, creating a healthier environment for hair growth.

  • Q3. Can I use ketoconazole alongside minoxidil treatment?

Yes. Ketoconazole shampoo can help create a clean scalp environment, allowing better absorption of minoxidil and improving the outcomes of treatment. It can also help with scalp irritation commonly associated with minoxidil.

  • Q4. Can I use Knix KZ as a daily-use shampoo?

Knix KZ should be used 2-3 times per week or as directed by the doctor. Excessive use can dry the scalp and worsen the condition. Do not use it for more than the recommended period of time. For daily use, a mild formula like Mildy AHF should be preferred, which is gentle on the scalp.

  • Q5. Can I use ketoconazole shampoo for chemically treated or coloured hair?

Yes, with care. Do not leave it on longer than 3-5 minutes, as extended contact can cause slight fading of hair colour. Follow each wash with a conditioner formulated for coloured hair to restore moisture, as medicated shampoos are more drying than cosmetic ones.

  • Q6. Do I need a prescription for ketoconazole 2% shampoo?

Yes, ketoconazole 2% concentration is a stronger one and should not be used without a doctor’s prescription. Higher concentrations have a risk of scalp irritation and therefore require medical supervision.

  • Q7. What are the side effects of using ketoconazole and zinc pyrithione shampoo?

Common side effects include scalp irritation, hair discolouration, and reduced curl definition in wavy hair, itching, burning sensation and contact dermatitis. Individuals with a history of allergic reactions should use it under the doctor’s supervision. Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth.
